Texas Legislature hands Port of Corpus Christi defeat

Just in from the Texas Capitol – The Texas Transportation Committee handed down a major legislative defeat to HB 4640, proposed by County Judge Barbara Canales and Port CEO Sean Strawbridge. HB 4640 allows the publicly owned Port of Corpus Christi to partner with Nueces County Judge Barbara Canales to develop land using their tax free status. The City of Corpus Christi, Port Aransas, Portland, San Patricio County, the Homebuilders, contractors, and powerful oil and gas industry all lined up against the bill. The House Transportation Committee shut it down.

Statement From Texas Representative J.M. Lozano:

I stood with San Patricio County, the City of Corpus Christi and Coastal Bend by voicing our concerns about HB 4640 that would give the Port of Corpus Christi an unfair advantage and unrestricted ability to develop lands. I proudly voted no on this bill and am thankful for my colleagues on this committee who also voted no. Together we defeated a bad bill.

The real question is, why does the Port of Corpus Christi’s Sean Strawbridge want to partner with Nueces County Judge Babs Canales and become developers? Stay tuned for this Developing story.
