Sexually abused victims want Jim Wells County D.A. to seek justice

Samantha Pena from Jim Wells County recalls the day her daughter told her she was being sexually assaulted. It was in April 2015 when the Child Protective Services came to talk to Samantha in regard to her boyfriend Pedro Cantu Jr about another sexual assault of a minor case.

At the time, Samantha didn’t know what was happening until that night she asked her 9 year old daughter if Pedro Cantu Jr has ever done anything sexually to her. Her daughter began to cry and told her that Samantha’s boyfriend had molested her numerous of times in the past.

Samantha Pena called police immediately and notified them what her daughter told her. Her daughter was taken to Weslaco Hospital for further examination and Pedro Cantu was arrested for Aggravated Sexual Assault on April 19, 2015.

Pedro Cantu Jr was placed on GPS ankle monitor and placed on pre-trial probation. However, Samantha Perez says more than 6 years has passed already and she feels like no justice has been done on behalf of the Brooks and Jim Wells County District Attorney Carlos Omar Garcia. Samantha says she has called the D.A. Carlos Omar Garcia numerous of times throughout the years and Pedro Cantu Jr is still not behind bars for the crime she feels has caused mental and developmental damage to her daughter.

It was on March 21, 2019 when Pedro Cantu Jr was arrested for another sexual related case in Victoria County. The indictment reads that Pedro Cantu was charged for Indecency With A Child By Sexual Contact. The report was made on October 3, 2009 but the indictment came almost ten years later.

David Oropez says his granddaughter was victimized by Pedro Cantu Jr on October 3, 2009 and feels like the criminal justice system failed to prosecute as well. Samantha Perez and David Oropez were able to get into contact and have been Facebook advocating for justice on behalf of the sexually victimized minors.

On May 24, 2021 Pedro Cantu Jr’s biological 17 year old daughter ‘Genesse’ also came out on social media recalling the times Pedro Cantu sexually assaulted her at the age of 10.

Samantha Pena and her family have been heavily active in bringing attention to Pedro Cantu Jr and just recently Brooks County District Attorney Omar Garcia reached out to her for a favor. The favor included giving up surveillance video of Alice Police Officer Sgt. Enrique Saenz caught on camera making threats of a search warrant on Samantha Perez’s business establishment. Sgt. Saenz left her beauty salon and wrecked into a vehicle and than arrested the man for the accident. In exchange for the footage, Samantha Perez says that District Attorney Carlos Omar Garcia was going to prosecute Pedro Cantu Jr. After releasing the footage to the District Attorney, Sgt. Enrique Saenz was terminated indefinitely and Samantha’s daughters case has yet come up for trial.

Furthermore, Samantha Pena says that Brooks and Jim Wells County District Attorney Carlos Omar Garcia has yet to keep his side of the deal and wants justice for her daughter swiftly.

The Corpus Christi Crónica has reached out the Jim Wells and Brooks County District Attorney’s Office on Wednesday, May 27, 2021 in regard to the Pedro Cantu Jr aggravated sexual assault case and have yet to recieve a response back.
