At around 5 p.m. the Corpus Christi Police Department was dispatched for a shots fired call on the 1800 block of Van Loan Street. The reporting caller advised that a black male wearing a blue t-shirt was seen with a rifle and walking into a house. The caller also advised that a vehicle sped away.
About thirty minutes later, another person called dispatch advising they were transporting a person with a gunshot wound to the head while driving on Comanche and Staples Street. The caller advised that they were near a yellow house behind the refineries and didn’t know the address. Police began to look for a yellow house in the area and cross referenced the previous call for shots fired.
When officers found a yellow house in the area described by the callers, 3 men were outside, and a black male wearing a blue t-shirt ran inside of a white painted house, next door to the yellow house. Police detained the two other men and other responding Police surrounded the home. Shots were then fired inside of the home triggering a heavy police response for the barricaded man, who was inside with another female. Police say the male subject was hostile and he was acting violently inside of the house while police tried to communicate with him.
Meanwhile, the gunshot wound victim was taken to trauma surgery and police couldn’t identify the shot victim at the time. Police were questioning the person who transported the victim to the hospital, but not much information was clarified at the time, other than a vehicle of interest. Police began to search for a maroon 2007 Yukon GMC that was possibly involved in the shooting.
Police were able to peacefully bring out the male who fled from police and who discharged a firearm inside of the home on Van Loan Street after an intense standoff. The subject was charged for Discharging a Firearm in City Limits and Evading Arrest.
At approximately 7:34 p.m. police were notified that the male victim who was shot passed away from his injuries while in surgery. The male victim has been identifed as 37 year old Bernard Yancey.
Investigators ended up locking down the original location call of shots fired at the 1800 block of Van Loan Street for a homicide investigation. Police are working to see if both events are related and this murder case is still under investigation.
