Lubbock man shoots girlfriends ex-husband over child custody interference

A Lubbock man shot and killed his girlfriends ex-husband during a child custody interference dispute on November 5, 2021.

A cellphone video was released Tuesday by an attorney for Chad Read’s widow depicts the deadly November 5 confrontation between the 54-year-old victim and Kyle Carruth outside his Lubbock home.

The video depicts Chad Read arguing with his ex-wife, Christina, before Carruth comes out of his home with a rifle, setting off the deadly situation on the front porch.

No arrests have been made in the fatal shooting as of Friday. The shooter has been listed as a suspect in police reports, but hasn’t been publicly identified by cops, civil court records of divorce identified the gunman as Kyle Carruth, a land developer and former husband of Anne-Marie Carruth, a judge in Lubbock and Crosby counties.

Gov. Greg Abbott appointed Anne-Marie Carruth judge of the 72nd Judicial District Court in Crosby and Lubbock Counties in January 2021 to take over the seat for a term set to expire at the end of 2022.

Christina Read and Kyle Carruth had been having an “ongoing affair” although he had still been married to the County Judge according to an affidavit.

Kyle Carruth’s lawyer said he was defending himself during what police called a “justifiable homicide” while citing Texas’ so-called Castle Doctrine, which allows the reasonable use of deadly force upon intruders by law.

The Texas Attorney General’s Office is reviewing the shooting after Lubbock police officials turned over their files on their investigation. As of this writing, no charges have been filed in the case.
