Today, Beto O’Rourke and Nueces County Judge Barbara Canales led a small campaign event today to discuss statewide issues including their positions in support of gun control. Readers may recall that Beto O’Rourke said, “Hell yes, we’re going to take your AR-15, your AK-47,” at a debate when he was running for president. Now he’s running for governor and Beto says he won’t be backing down from the statement. Nueces County Judge Barbara Canales says she supports Beto’s position to take away assault rifles.
Barbara and Beto have also been advocates for the “Green New Deal.” Their position has been seen as hostile by energy companies as they are against the oil and gas industry that created the “Texas Miracle” and is credited for keeping the Texas economy moving. Beto’s stance against fracking and off shore drilling has injured him among voters in Texas who want the United States not to be dependent on a foreign supply. The Coastal Bend economy depends upon jobs in the oil and gas industry. Locally, tens of thousands of families rely upon the jobs in the local oil and gas industry to support their families.
Nueces County Judge Barbara Canales remains the closest statewide ally to Beto O’Rourke inviting him to Nueces County monthly. Beto, Barbara are said to be joining Comgresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who was in San Antonio today, along with the Democratic Socialists of America in a statewide rally that is being scheduled in Houston. With days away from early voting, the group is taking their grassroots campaign to the streets to get out the vote.
Early voting begins Monday, February 14-February 25.
