5 bodies found dead inside home tied to inmate who escaped TDCJ

A spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety says that 5 bodies were found dead in Leon County near the area where escaped inmate Gonzalo Lopez was last seen in May.

According to Leon County Sherriff’s Office, the U.S. Marshals Lone Star Fugitive Task Force has captured escaped inmate Gonzalo Lopez. He was shot dead at 10:24 p.m. on Thursday, June 2, 2022 after Lopez sped through Poteet, Texas through Highway 16 where Lopez shot at police.

Authorities are asking residents to be on the lookout for a white Chevrolet SUV. A large police presence has been spotted in the Centerville area, including a helicopter. Several social media users also reported seeing an increased law enforcement agency presence. Lopez is a convicted murderer who was able to escape police custody on May 12.

Authorities say Lopez escaped on Highway 7 after he stabbed a TDCJ correctional officer who was transporting him to Huntsville for a medical appointment. The 46-year-old was serving a life sentence for capital murder out of Hidalgo County and attempted capital murder out of Webb County. It is unclear how far the inmate has traveled since the date of his disappearance or where he currently might be. If you see Lopez, call 911 or DPS Communications at (979) 776-3101.
